Margret S. de Oliveira Castro’s book, Innocent Enemies, details the experiences of her father, Friedrich Walter Schlösser, who was jailed in El Salvador, interned in the USA, and deported to Germany during WWII. Arrested in 1941, he spent more than a year-and-a-half incarcerated in Camp Kenedy, Texas, before being moved to Crystal City, Texas family internment camp, where he was joined by his wife and son. Three months later they were sent to Germany on the February 1944 voyage of the Gripsholm. Full of photographs and contemporaneous descriptions by her father, the book offers readers close-up glimpses of life while jailed in El Salvador and Camp Kenedy and later, in Germany, both during and after the War. Available through Dorrance Publishing Company, Pittsburgh, PA, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon. (Read an abbreviated version of the Schlössers’ story)
